August 29 marks the start of the new women’s football season. This is the date chosen by the Women’s Football Division for the start of the 2021-22 Serie A championship. It will be a 12-team championship: the first two will gain access to the Champions League, while the last three will be relegated to Serie B, in view of the first professional women’s championship that will be composed of ten teams, as established by the Federal Council. In the period between August 28 and September 12, the matches will be played in the evening or at night.
Coppa Italia. The 26 clubs that are part of Serie A and Serie B are automatically registered for the 2021-22 Coppa Italia. 24 clubs will participate in the group stage. Before this phase, a preliminary round will take place, in which the last four clubs in the ranking will face each other in a knockout round, in two leg matches, and two of them will qualify for the group stage. The winners of the eight groups will qualify for the quarter-finals. Then the quarter finals and semi-finals will be two leg matches while the final will be a knock-out one.
Supercoppa italiana. The format of the “Italian Supercup” has been confirmed with respect to the 2020-2021 edition. Juventus and A.C. Milan, respectively first and second in the last championship, Roma as winners of the last Coppa Italia and Sassuolo, who finished the championship in third place, will participate since A.C. Milan – finalist of the last Coppa Italia – obtained the right to play the competition through the second place in the championship. In the semi-finals, in the event of a draw at the end of the two regular periods, the game will go straight to penalty shoot-outs. In the final, however, there will be two extra time periods of 15′ each. The dates of the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa will be announced later this season.
