A winning youth academy, the black and green pride
Primavera Scudetto and Super Cup
2024 has been a historic year for Sassuolo Calcio: the Primavera team won their first Scudetto and, a few months later, lifted the Primavera Super Cup, capping off to continuously invest in its academy
After qualifying for the Final Phase of the Primavera 1 for the secondo time in a row, Coach Bigica’s team made their dream come true. Atalanta was Sassuol’s first opponent in a match held at Viola Park, where only a win would do: a draw would have rewarded the Bergamaschi side due to their better league position. The match were settled by a goal from Flavio Russo, wich sent the Black&greens trought to the semi-finals against Inter. The Nerazzurri finished the regular season in first place and beat Sassuolo in both fixtures this season. Bigica’s boy were not intimidated and defeated Inter 3-1. thanks to goals from Kevin Bruno, Flavio Russo and Kevin Leone. The final against Roma, played on May 2024 at Curva Fiesole Stadium made history. After a balanced first half, Sassuolo exploded in the second half: Matteo Falasca opened the scoring with a left-footed volley from a corner kick, followed by Simone Cinquegrano who doubled the lead with a header. Flavio Russo made it 3-0, crowning an extraordinary season as the league’s top scorer with 24 goals. In the dying minutes, there was also time for two sensational saves by Daniel Theiner, that sealed the match and sparked celebrations for the Black&greens as they clinched the 2023/24 Primavera Scudetto. During the medal ceremony, Flavio Russo was also awarded the Piermario Morosini award for best player of the Final Phase.
The Scudetto gives Sassuolo’s Primavera team the chance to compete for another national trophy: the Primavera Super Cup. On the evening of Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at Mapei Stadium, the Black&greens, Italian champions, faced Fiorentina, the winners of the Primavera Coppa Italia. In front of their fans, Sassuolo won 2-0 with goals from Kevin Bruno and Andrea Moriano, thus also winning the Primavera Super Cup. A historic double that confirmed the talent and growth of the black&green academies.
Scudetto and Berretti Super Cup
The Black&greens qualified for the final phase reserved to the professional teams after finishing first in Group A. In the semifinals, coach Stefano Morrone’s team beat Atalanta: away win 4-2 in the first leg and 1-1 in the second one. The Black&greens conquered the title of Italian Champion in the Berretti category, beating Torino 6-2 in the final: it is the first Italian championship at youth level for Sassuolo.
After the Scudetto, captain Raspadori and his teammates also won the Supercoppa Berretti. At the Comunale of Francavilla, Sassuolo beat Ferlapisalò (winner of the Berretti title for Serie C teams) 3-0.
Three titles at the Viareggio Tournament
In 2017 Sassuolo Calcio won the Viareggio Tournament for the first time, claiming the 69th edition of the competition. After passing the group stage on equal points with Bologna (PSV and Pisa were eliminated), in the round of 16 Blak&greens beat Fiorentina during shootout (1-1 at the end of game). The same thing happened in the quarterfinals, when Paolo Mandelli’s players defeated Inter (1-1 at the end of 90 min.) while, in semi-finals, it was Torino who were beaten from the penalty spot after the final 0-0. The final success came by beating Empoli during the penalty shootout, once again. Ginaluca Scamacca, who scored the 2-2 goal at the end of regular time and then trasformed the winning penality, has been decisive. Sassuolo also won the title of the best goalkeeper of the tournament: Bryan Costa.
