The facility
A constantly evolving project
Built in 1994 in the northern part of Reggio Emilia, it immediately became a state-of-the-art stadium on the Italian football scene. In fact, in addition to being the first club-owned stadium in Italy, it was built following an English like model to offer spectators maximum comfort and great vision of the action for all seats.
2013 - A new beginning with Mapei
Since December 2013, the stadium has been under exclusive concession to Mapei Stadium Srl. Since then, a process of constant modernization has been underway to bring the facility up to international standards.
Many improvements have been made, from the renovation of the playing field and benches to the installation of LED advertising boards around the pitch and two giant screens. The stands have been refurbished and new seats installed, the various indoor and outdoor areas have been repainted, the furnishings of the 32 vip boxes and hospitality areas have been renovated, and the three changing rooms have been completely refurbished to better accommodate both the home and away teams. Thanks to the “Open Stadium without Barriers” project, the structures separating the pitch from the stands have been reduced, with the aim of transforming Mapei Stadium into a place where fans can enjoy a positive and safe experience, feeling like an integral part of the sporting event.
2019 - Modernization and Innovation
In 2019, the Mapei Stadium took another step forward with the construction of a new 108-seat press stand and a modern conference room capable of accommodating over 80 journalists and media operators. In addition, there is a large media working area and a flash interview area that complies with all Uefa requirements.
But the work did not stop there. The roofs of the Main and Front stands have been renovated and, as part of the modernization process, the latest generation of digital turnstiles have been installed, allowing access via smartphone, simplifying checks and speeding up entry. The TV compound—the technological heart of broadcasting and events—has also been completely renovated to ensure efficiency and services for broadcasters from all over the world.
2023 - The lighting system
2023 marked a further step forward, bringing innovation to the visual and emotional experience: the lighting system for the playing field was completely revamped, integrated with a new series of projectors dedicated to entertainment and scenic lighting, both inside and outside the stadium. Thanks to technology from Thorn, a Zumtobel Group brand, Mapei Stadium can now offer spectacular light and color displays that are fully customizable. This allows every match or event to be transformed into an engaging show, capable of firing up the crowd and creating a unique atmosphere.
2025 - The new turf
The 2025/26 season marks another major innovation: Mapei Stadium has been fitted with new, 100% natural turf, produced by Italian company Paradello using NorthBridge, a type of grass created by Oklahoma State University and also used on the pitches for the 2026 World Cup in North America.
This is an important choice, as it confirms the transition from a hybrid system to a 100% natural pitch, selected for its excellent performance: it tolerates cold well, maintains a bright green color even in winter, roots easily, and is highly resistant, remaining uniform and performing well even with intensive use, as is the case at Mapei Stadium, which regularly hosts more than one match per week.
It is not just about performance, but also sustainability: the approximately five tons of synthetic fibers from the old field have been completely recycled, confirming Mapei’s social and environmental commitment.
Events
Mapei Stadium – Città del Tricolore has been and continues to be the stage for national and international sporting events.
These events have made Mapei Stadium one of the most versatile and popular venues in Italy, capable of welcoming fans and teams from all over the world. It is a stadium that lives beyond the league, becoming the setting for major events that ignite the passion and pride not only of Sassuolo fans but of the entire region.
Italian national team
The Italian national team has already played five official matches here, sparking enthusiasm throughout the city. The stadium was also chosen to host several matches of the 2019 UEFA European U21 Championship, bringing young talent from all over Europe to Reggio Emilia.
European evenings
Mapei Stadium has also been the setting for important European nights: it has hosted Sassuolo in Europa League, as well as Atalanta, underlining its international appeal and its ability to meet UEFA requirements.
Prestigious finals
The 2020 Italian Super Cup final and the 2020/21 Coppa Italia final are to be remembered, which confirms the stadium as the ideal venue for prestigious sporting and media events.
Women's football
Women’s football is also well represented: in 2016, Mapei Stadium hosted the UEFA Women’s Champions League final, bringing the best teams in Europe to its pitch, and in 2021, the Women’s Coppa Italia final.

Initiatives
Culture, social interaction, and community
Mapei Stadium – Città del Tricolore is also a social and cultural hub for Reggio Emilia. As Simona Giorgetta, sole administrator of the Mapei Stadium, points out, “the stadium is an open space that promotes inclusion, aggregation, and dialogue with the city.”
With these cultural and social initiatives, Mapei Stadium confirms its status as a lively venue where sport, art, and civic commitment intertwine, making the stadium a home open to all.
Sport, passion and inclusion
Since 2023, the west facade of the stadium has been showcasing “All together now,” a work by Reggio Emilia artist Olimpia Zagnoli. Inspired by a 1964 video of Liverpool fans singing in unison, the artwork depicts a diverse crowd united in song, symbolizing how passion for sport can be transformed into positive and inclusive energy.
Environment, beauty and sustainability
The same year, Mapei Stadium donated 150 cherry trees to brighten up the flower beds of the municipal car park in front of the stadium with their flowers and colors.
This is a concrete gesture to make the area that welcomes fans and citizens more beautiful and sustainable.
Women, awareness and support
The stadium also supports important social initiatives. In September 2024, Mapei Stadium joined the “Parole Parole Parole” project by Reggio Emilia artist Elena Mazzi, dedicated to the fight against violence against women. Special wallpaper has been installed in some significant areas of the stadium (the press room and the two public areas in front of the Sassuolo Lounge and the Mapei Lounge). Those passing through these spaces will initially be struck by the colorful wall and its pop graphics. Looking closer, they will discover its hidden message, made up of words and phrases from women who have suffered violence and told their stories. With the installation of the wallpaper, Mapei Stadium is supporting the Nondasola Association, which runs the Anti-Violence Center – Casa delle Donne in Reggio Emilia, strengthening its relationship with the community and the local area.
Young people, culture and sports
In addition, for several years now, Mapei Stadium has been supporting, together with Generazione S, the social responsibility project of U.S. Sassuolo Calcio aimed at young athletes, the Internazionale Kids Festival, the journalism festival for children, hosting moments of share, culture, and sport.
